Changed My Life

Conversations may happen every day, but the life changing ones are few and far between. And when those life-altering conversations do occur, they're not something that I soon forget. That is why I can remember one particular conversation as though it happened just yesterday.

A couple of years ago, a friend and neighbor of mine who is both gay and out, David, told me about his experiences with discrimination. I was about to learn that being openly gay in my community was like throwing yourself in front of a firing squad! I'd had no idea. The abuse is horrible, and had I been in his situation, I wouldn't ever have no idea how to resolve such a situation.

David recounted a string of derogatory names and even a time when someone spit on him! Only once did he file a complaint with local authorities, but although the situation was dealt with, he found that the "regular" tormentors just became more careful about their viciousness.

This conversation truly opened my eyes to what can happen when ignorance is allowed to thrive, and since then, it has become one of my life's goals to educate people and alleviate ignorance around me.
