 Co-Worker is Gay!
It may shock you to hear it, but I'm not an actor, dancer, designer or flight attendant, but I am gay! I'm not even one of the Steelworkers of America:who the writers of The Simpsons so humorously told to "Keep reaching for that rainbow".
I'm a pharmaceutical scientist responsible for formulations developments. My job requires me to develop and modify pharmaceutical formulations and new manufacturing processes in order to obtain a stable and bio-equivalent product, for new and existing products, both prompt release and sustained release. Complicated, huh? Well don't worry, I'm smart enough to handle it:my colleagues, on the other hand, started off as another story.
I didn't come out of the closet until I was well into my college years, and I kept it rather hush-hush for a very long time. It was during my time at work that I actually openly began to talk about my boyfriend and other aspects of gay life.
I can't say if many of my work colleagues were terribly shocked the first time I told them right out that I'm gay. Perhaps some of them had guessed, I'd never tried to make people think that I'm straight; I'd simply never said otherwise. Instantly from this point on, then work became a cold and an uncomfortable place to be on a daily basis. Where we'd all been chummy before, no one seemed to know how to act around me. It was like I was dying of some terrible disease and they didn't know how to talk to me!
As time passed though, so did the discomfort. People, in general, pretty understand:they're just not good with change.
