 My Best Straight Guy Friend
The fact is simple: Most males really enjoy being male. Let's face it - having a penis is awesome! We all have certain physical features in common with other males. Depending on the individual, this pride of masculinity may cause a varying degree of arousal when a guy looks at another male. Even if they have no desire for actual romantic or intimate contact with another male, it can still be an erotic image. However, basic admiration or "looking at another guy" can be very far from a desire to live a gay lifestyle with him. Nearly all-gay men would agree there is more to homosexuality than that.
So when my best straight guy friend pulled me aside to talk about something "very serious", I had to hold back a huge guffaw at his admission that he'd had a dream about having sex with another guy, and that it hadn't been a nightmare. There was sweat on his brow and his eyes wouldn't stay focused on one thing. It was like he was certain that there were spies out there, waiting for that exact moment to call him gay.
So I sat him down, got him a beer and had a long chat with him. This was really the first time that we actually talked about being gay. He knew that I am gay, and he's always been fine with that, but we'd never actually talked about the details of a gay mindset. A gay lifestyle understood.
I discovered that he wasn't necessarily afraid of being gay as much as he was terrified of what it might do to his life. He was married with two beautiful little girls. He loved his wife very much and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
So he was more than a little relieved to know that this little dream of his didn't mean divorce and joint custody of his children.
It's funny what the mind can do to you. The male mind is so proud of its penis that it sometimes jerks you around a bit to keep you on your toes. As for me, I was just honoured that my friend felt so comfortable talking to me about a topic he found so sensitive. I think we're even closer now than we were before!
