 My Summer Vacation
Last summer, I participated in an international exchange program through my workplace, where I went to Holland for June and July, and my Dutch counter-part came to the US to work here. It was a project that was meant to open our eyes and allow us to experience different work situations and therefore learn and improve our own.
So I left my wife, kissing her as I got out of the car at the airport, and promised to call her as soon as I arrived. I can tell you this right now: Portland, Oregon and Amsterdam are two VERY different places. My eyes weren't just opened as far as workplace efficiency, but to the fact that my marriage is empty, and I knew exactly why.
Michael and I met on the first day and it was as though lightning struck us. I found so many new experiences that were perfect for me and found that I thought on my wife less and less. I know it sounds horrible, but that's the way it went.
July was quickly coming to an end, and it was becoming clearer and clearer that there wasn't anything waiting for me in the US. I called my wife. We both cried, but she was very understanding. And it was decided.
I have been back to the US a few times, but my home and my heart is in Holland. Michael and I are deeply in love and I hope to spend the rest of my life with him.
