 How I told my Father
I have been lucky and have a great relationship with my parents through out my childhood and through college. While I never was one to tell them all of my secrets when I was twenty two I decided I must tell my father about my life more in detail before he found out from anyone else. In my house honesty and openness was always the most accepted form of communication.
I should also mention that my dad is Irish and when I come home for visits we head out to the bar for the night. I used to think that this was cool when I was younger but now that I am actually of drinking age I don't really think it is so cool anymore.
So we were on our way to the local bar, my dad was rambling on about how my mother was getting into her gardening, and the house was overflowing with smelly flowers when I realized I should tell him now before we get to the bar that I am gay.
I am not sure how I ever got up the courage but I can remember thinking, at the next red light I am just going to start talking and so I did. I came right out and said, 'dad, I have something to tell you that may make you need a beer a little more' and the first thing he said is 'oh it can't be that bad' and so I continued on telling him that I have feel in love with the most amazing man and that we want to live together after college.
You know what - all he said was, 'as long as you are happy and still come and visit your mother and me I am sure that it can't be that bad'.
I was so overjoyed! I remember him saying something like, well you aren't the first boy to turn on girls and I am sure you are not going to be the last but we are still a family. I never realized that my own dad, the Irish mean tempered hard workingman would ever be so open-minded!
I just wanted to tell all of you that no matter how bad you think things are going to get your parents are still going to love you no matter what.
